Like portraits, my paintings are windows into a complex character: the city in which I live. Each of its buildings--static, rigid, and stylistically cohesive by itself--is energized by the often-conflicting designs of its neighbors. The resulting arrangements reflect the lives and choices of the city’s residents, whose presence is implied by every structure, object and material in this landscape. For the most part, I do not focus on these inhabitants themselves, but rather on their contributions to the built environment. Geometric and intricate, the cityscape is as much a theater for light as it is for people. I find the architecture is most dynamic when the sky is lit, but the light is too horizontal to penetrate the elevated plane of the city’s rooftops. I chase the light around at these times of day, watching the city descend into film noir. There is an uneasy beauty in this urban landscape. Its vibrant splendor is a quarrel between natural light and artificial structure; the streetlights are its intermediaries.
