Million Fishes Monthly
Newsletter |
Issue 1:Inaugural Issue
April 2005 |
|
 |
| Yes, it is finally here, the first issue of
the REEL, the Million Fishes Monthly Newsletter. It's an exciting
time for Million Fishes, we recently got accepted to the incubator
program with the Intersection for the arts.(www.theintersection.org)
and our biggest, most ambitious show, the Shelter
Exhibition, is just a month away. Our call for artist's
has passed the deadline but we are actively seeking volunteers
to help with street marketing, organizing, set up, and operations.
If you would like to get involved with a phenomenal art project
contact us ASAP. Additionally, our yoga program
has been a regular occurrence, as well as our art
critique group. We were involved with our second MAPP
project on March 19 and will continue to be involved, the
next MAPP event will coincide with the Shelter show. Additionally,
Check out our Fish Happenings. |

Million Fishes Art Collective hosts its largest show to
date, opening three exhibition spaces showcasing the works
of fifteen artists, performers, architects, musicians
and designers collectively responding to the concept of
“Shelter”.
Shelter Exhibition is a conceptual exploration of shelter
as a social construction, environmental distinction, behavior
pattern and ideology. Challenging the traditional gallery
showcase, Shelter Exhibition channels an array of ideas
and approaches, generating an experimental forum that
is both an exhibition and an interactive experience.
A message from the curators Mike,
Kevin
and Yes:
After sorting through a vast number of outstanding art
submissions from artists working all over the US from
California, Oregon, to Massachusetts and even New Zealand,
we have finally distilled the work down to 15 artists!
We are very excited to showcase and experience the works
and collaborations of this diverse team of artists, each
engaging in creative dialogue about Shelter.
Both the opening and the closing events are going to
be energetic and exciting, as our visual artists, performance
artists, musicians, poets and gallery-goers breathe life
into a cohesive, collaborative, experimental show for
the public.

Out of the Woodwork, the upcoming
exhibition from California College of the Arts
Wood/Furniture graduates explores unconventional
interpretations of furniture. Pieces exhibited range
from finely crafted furnishings to compelling
conceptual installations.
Wood/Furniture program director, Donald Fortescue has
suggested, "The department should be referred to
as the"/" (Slash) program" as it occupies
the fertile and largely unexplored space between woodwork,
sculpture, and furniture design. Out of the Woodwork features
seven artists; Miriam
Blachman, Emily Glotch, Yekaterina Lutsker, Christine
Pyers, Mei-yen Shipek, Andrew Utt and Portia Wells. |

Our participation in the last Mission Arts and Performance
Project: MAPP was a huge success. In our Million Fishes
Cellar we had bodies of work by three photographers: Charlie
Schneider, Lars, and one of our own resident artists, Ivy
Chuang. In the Million Fishes Gallery we housed a collection
of exquisite works of cut paper by Casey Watson and great
musical performances by Ian Shaul, Anna Laube, and Pirate
Radio. The MAPP tour that connected us with the other 5
participating spaces was also well attended and we look
forward to doing it again.
Highlights from other spaces for the night include: interactive
street art performance by Jeff Cowherd on 23rd St between
our space and the Red Poppy art house, performance art at
the Orange garage and Garage De La Folsom, a free yoga class
taught by Million Fishes Yoga instructor Begonia Lamparros,
a photography exhibit at the Red Garage, and nearby Mixed-Use’s
first participation in MAPP. This was the largest MAPP yet,
with more participating spaces, artists, performers, and
the largest attendance to date and we hope to build upon
this success by making the next MAPP occurring on Saturday,
May 28th even better.
